CRANFORD - The high school career of Cranford senior and Campbell-bound Johnny Bush came to an end in grand fashion on Monday.
Bush shot a 1-under-par 71 (34-37) to finish in a second-place tie with North Hunterdon senior
and Monmouth-bound Erik Stevens in the 85th annual NJSIAA/MGA Boys Golf Individual State
Championship and took home medalist honors in the Group 3 championship with a five stroke
victory over Mainland junior Michael Mitnick at Hopewell Valley Golf and Country Club.
After a double bogey on the par 3 third, Bush responded with four birdies over his last six holes
on the front nine for a 3-under 34. Bush continued his momentum on the back nine with a birdie
on the par 4 11th hole to move to 4-under and the top spot on the leaderboard with eight holes to
However, three bogeys on holes 12, 13, and 15 left Bush with a back nine 37 for his final
tournament score of 71.
Overall, Christian Brothers senior and South Carolina-bound Jack Wall parred the second
playoff hole to defeat senior teammate and Rutgers-bound Brendan Hansen to capture his second
straight individual title.
“Today was fun. I was 4-under through 11 after starting off with a double bogey on the third hole
and then birdied six out of my next eight holes,” said Bush, who will play in the NYC Amateur
this weekend and then have a healthy summer schedule with some qualifying tournaments before
heading to Buies Creek, North Carolina to start his college career. “I misjudged some wedges
and shots coming in with the wind, but overall I’m happy with the performance and the finish.
It’s sad to have the high school career end, but I feel like my game is as good as it ever has been
and today reflected that.”
