CRANFORD, NJ – Cranford residents were in for a sweet treat during Sunday’s 7th Annual Rubber Ducky Race, which was filmed for the TV series “Cake Boss.”

Thousands were in attendance to see rubber ducks race from little falls in Sperry Park to a finish line, where they were collected by volunteers. The purchaser of the winning ducks won prizes, with proceeds benefiting the Hanson Park Conservancy.

“People young and old line the river and bridge to cheer the duckies on as they float toward the finish line,” Cynthia Dawley, president of the Hanson Park Conservancy, said before the event. “It is a wonderful event, simple old-fashioned fun that somehow creates such happiness and excitement from all that attend.”

Kids, parents and grandparents filled the park to catch a glimpse of the pink, yellow and blue ducks as they floated toward the finish line. Bernie Wagenblast, host of Cranford Radio, announced a play-by-play of the action.

Following the race, Buddy Valastro, owner of Carlo’s Bakery and star of “Cake Boss” wheeled in a giant cake resembling a yellow rubber duck.

Crowds swarmed around Valastro to sample the confection and try to meet the reality star, who served the first slice of cake with his wife and son.

“I just wanted to thank you guys for allowing myself and my family to be here today,” Valastro said to the crowd. “People don’t think we have beautiful places like this in New Jersey. But we do, and it’s right here in Cranford, baby!”

Slices of the cake were passed around to everyone in attendance, who milled around the park afterwards to hear the winners of the race.

“I loved it,” 11-year-old Abigail Smith said after she finished her slice. “I want to be a baker one day.”

Although a specific date was not given, members of the “Cake Boss” crew told inquirers that the episode will air between eight months and one year from now.

Scutari vs Mahr

February 16, 2018

I read with interest in a local newspaper regarding the Union county democrat party political infighting for their “county chair” selection.  There were 2 letters juxtaposed, each one listing supporters of either Senator Scutari or Fanwood Mayor Mahr, who are the two main people vying for the “boss” position.

Although I am a democrat I am not a committee ...
