CRANFORD - Congratulations to this week's Cranford High School Athletes of the Week, Elizabeth McCaffery and Dennis DeMarino. McCaffery and DeMarino have also been named the Union County Conference Athletes of the Week.

McCaffery, a junior guard on the varsity girls basketball team, had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals in their 61-35 victory over Carteret on Saturday. She now has back-to-back games with 10+ points (2/6 vs. Westfield 14 points). McCaffery and her teammates look to make some noise in the Union County Tournament and the State Tournament.

"We've been working on pushing the ball up court faster than we have in the past," said McCaffery. "We're hoping for a good seed in the County and to go as far as possible. Same thing goes for the State Tournament. We just want to be as successful as we can."

DeMarino, a junior on the boys varsity basketball team, has recorded a double-double in two of his last three games with 19 points and 10 rebounds against New Providence this past Thursday and 13 points and 10 rebounds against Pingry last week.

The boys basketball team has had a roller coaster of a season. After starting 3-0, the Cougars dropped nine of their next 11 games. DeMarino believes that during the skid, the team was able to identify who they are and make the necessary corrections. Since then, Cranford is on a four-game winning streak.

"After we lost four in a row, we realized that we just need to play better as a team," said DeMarino. "We lost early because we were still finding ourselves as a team. But now that we're playing well, our goal is to win the Section."
