CRANFORD - Congratulations to this week's Cranford High School Athletes of the Week, Mary Johnstone and Andrew Iacovano. Johnstone and Iacovano were also named Union County Conference Athletes of the Week.

Johnstone is a senior on the varsity girls volleyball team who in the first week of the season has earned over 50 assists. Despite the 6-14 finish last season, Johnstone's strong play has helped lead Cranford to a 4-0 start.

"We have a new coach this year for varsity and JV in coach Taylor and coach Jason," said Johnstone. "They're doing a really great job and the program is looking up. There's just a whole different vibe this season. It's much more positive with the girls and we're working really well together."

Iacovano is a senior goalie on the varsity boys soccer team. He earned back-to-back shutouts against Rahway and South Plainfield this past week. Cranford boys soccer is coming off an 8-12 season but are off to a 2-1 start.

"Our defense has improved tremendously since the beginning of our preseason," said Iacovano. "Our energy before the game with getting hyped-up, being more positive, and communicating with each other has helped on and off the field. Even our bench players give us a lot of enegy as well."
