CRANFORD, NJ - Due to impressive performances as goalies for varsity lacrosse, Anna Horne and Phil Marotta are Cranford High School's Athletes of the Week.
Horne, a junior, has 408 career saves. Her current total for the season is 84 saves as she helped lead the Cougars to victory in games against Montville and Governor Livingston.
"I like the team dynamic of lacrosse," she said. "We all have one goal and we work towards it together."
After high school, Horne hopes to play at the collegiate level.
"I just want to play well for my coach, my teammates and myself," she said. "I look up to all my coaches, especially my goalie coach because she played at Drew and helps me a lot in my training."
Marotta, also a junior, leads the Cougar's defense, which had a 4-2 record for the first six games of the season. He's currently averaging 12 saves per game, with 17-save performance in a win against Hackettstown.
"I definitely like the speed of the game," Marotta said. "There's always action and it's always moving."
He hopes to play in college as well.
"I just have to be a leader on the field, especially as a goalie," Marotta said. "You have to be able to step up and do well."
