CRANFORD, NJ – A head coach always faces challenges when a new season begins, for Greg Campbell, entering his fourth season as head coach of boys soccer, one of the challenges he faces will be overcoming inexperience. Many players will be making their varsity level debut, Campbell stated, “There is always a learning curve when players try to adjust to the increased tempo and physicality at the varsity level, so ironing out those issues during our preseason will be very important.”
During the off-season, the players trained three times per week since early July, focusing on fitness and technical development.
Coming off of a 4-13-2 record last year, Campbell expects to field a much more competitive team this season, he said, “Our goal is to compete on both the conference and county levels and to make the state tournament.”
To accomplish this, Campbell expects major contributions from his returning players, these include; seniors Jakub Iwaniuk, Domonic Meliado, Mike Smith and Colin Matheson along with, sophomore Matthew Medeiros, who led the team in scoring as a freshman.
Cranford kicks off their 2015 season on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 4:00 p.m., at Union Catholic.
