CRANFORD - Cranford officials are warning residents about potential contact tracer scams.

"Even in the midst of this extraordinary emergency, there are some who will prey on the public’s fears and attempt to defraud people, especially the elderly," the Township of Cranford daily newsletter read.

According to the release, If you receive a telephone call or text from someone claiming to be a Contact Tracer for COVID-19 please follow this warning:

  • NEVER give Social Security or bank information. Contact tracers do not need that information.
  • Contact tracers DO NOT text people; legitimate contact tracing usually includes a call to educate the person, advise they may have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 and be at risk and symptoms to look out for.
