CRANFORD, NJ – Cranford VFW Post 335 Commander Boxwell announced today that Paul Maloney will be the local recipient of the VFW Educator of the year Award for 2016.

Maloney’s credentials are simply overwhelming.  After 35 years of teaching American and World History courses, he has become somewhat of a legend in the educator’s community.  His peers and superiors alike, praise him for his innovative techniques not the least of which is portraying famous historical figures in class right down to the last detail including costumed attire.  He uses modern media, personal experience and alternative tools like class trips to historical places, to help him link “real life” learning to American values and history.

From a VFW perspective, Maloney’s marvelous teaching attributes have been exposed during our annual Veterans Breakfast.  For more than two decades, Maloney has brought a talented bevy of students before the 80 or more veterans in attendance at this annual event.

At the breakfast, each student reads a short speech on a veteran’s related topic that was assigned by Maloney.  The topics are all relevant and give the students the opportunity to reflect on a personal level, on what and who veterans are and what they mean to our country.

The students over the years have become the overwhelming highlight of the morning.  They invariably get the longest standing ovation of all our speakers, from our crowd of veterans.  It is no doubt they deserve such praise.

However, the real honor, the real praise belongs to the one who brought them to the dais.  They are filled with the confidence, knowledge and understanding and of what veterans and patriotism are and they show the abilities to express these issues successfully.

Past Post Commander Jim D'Arcy commented " It is my great honor to see Mr. Paul Maloney nominated as the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year.  His qualifications, I believe, are irreproachable."

Maloney's nomination will be submitted to the district level as well as the state level for evaluation. We look forward to a positive response to this nomination.

Maloney will be recognized at the local VFW Post at 479 South Ave East on April 10 at 7:30 PM. All are welcomed to attend.
