CRANFORD - Bloomingdale Avenue School (BAS) has announced that Diane Cruz has been selected as the 2019-2020 Educator of the Year.
Mrs. Diane Cruz is a first grade teacher at Bloomingdale Avenue School, where she has worked at for over 14 years. Prior to arriving at BAS, she taught for three years in Jersey City.
Each year, Mrs. Cruz creates a classroom environment based on mutual respect and ownership. Together, the class establishes rules, routines, and expectations with Mrs. Cruz serving as the model. Mrs. Cruz is not only passionate about the curriculum, but she is adamant about teaching life skills as well. From the very first day of school, students are encouraged to make eye contact and shake her hand at the end of each day. It is a small daily task, but an important life skill.
Academically, students thrive under Mrs. Cruz. Mrs. Cruz gets to know each student as an individual and then plans instruction to meet their needs. She is constantly learning, researching and implementing different techniques in order to best match her delivery of instruction to the student’s learning style. Mrs. Cruz is a leader in multi sensory instruction and has begun to implement personal learning strategies in her classroom.
"Mrs. Cruz is a model of a life-long learner," said BAS Principal Lourdes Murphy. "She has earned her Master’s Degree in Education and continues to take courses. She is an active participant in professional development attending workshops, watching webinars, and reading current articles. Independently, Mrs. Cruz seeks out professional development opportunities and implements her new learning into the classroom."
