UNION COUNTY, NJ -- Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and State Senator Nick Scutari continue their outreach to Democrats to support their candidacies for Union County Democratic Committee chairman.

Mayor Mahr, the acting chair following Jerry Green's resignation last week, sent a letter to committee members this week that also has been posted on a Mayor Colleen Mahr for County Chair Facebook page.

I have been very proud to partner with the Assemblyman (Jerry Green) for the last five years as Vice Chair, fighting against the Christie policies and working on the front lines to ensure that Phil Murphy became the next governor of the state of NJ. We not only maintained, but gained seats in local elections and we did it with terrific men and women candidates which reflected the blue wave that is coming.

I’m asking for your support in my candidacy to become our County Committee's next Chair. I look forward to starting a new chapter for our organization that will embrace the progressive values we all hold dear and build upon our shared past successes. To that end, I will work for you and with you to expand, improve and grow our County party...

We are driven by the guiding principles of inclusion, transparency, greater party participation and the promotion of strong, healthy, democratic institutions. Together, we share a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Union County residents in our urban and suburban communities. Derek and I will recruit diverse candidates from all over the County, from East to West and up to the Ridge! Most importantly, we will make decisions with the input and advice of the entire Democratic Committee.

According to party bylaws, Mahr has assumed the responsibilities of acting Chair, and will meet with the Chairs and Officers of the UCDC on Wednesday, Jan. 31, to establish the date, time and place of the upcoming Convention. She has tabbed Linden Mayor Derek Armstead to partner with her as 1st Vice Chairman to build a "powerhouse" organization.

Meanwhile, Senator Scutari issued a press release targeting Mahr's core base of support with the headline Women Representing Every Corners of Union County Back Nick Scutari for Democratic Chairman. The announcemnt lists recent endorsers, including Freeholders Linda Carter (Plainfield) and Bette Jane Kowalski (Cranford), recently retired Vernell Wright (Union Twp.), and members of the Union County Democratic Women's Club, among others.

“As a woman who ran twice for public office, I know how important it is to have support from the leadership around me. Nick didn’t just support my campaign financially, he invested his own personal time in my campaign and my team," writes Luisa Bianco, a 2014 and 2016 candidate for Scotch Plains Council. "There are so many reasons I believe he’s the most qualified candidate for county chair, but what stands out for me the most is that he was there to support me.”

Nick Scutari has served in the New Jersey State Senate since 2004, where he represents the 22nd Legislative District. Before his election the Senate, he was a member of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, where he was the youngest Freeholder Chairman in county history. Prior to that, he served as a member of the Board of Education in Linden.

There is no shortage of polling data related to the functioning of our Federal, ...
