Free Shakespeare in the Park in Westfield Aug. 31 to Sept. 1

WESTFIELD, NJ --Troupe of Friends and the Westfield Recreation Dept. will present three free performances of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 31, September 1 and 2 at 8:00 p.m. in Mindowaskin Park in downtown Westfield.
The play, directed by Joseph Penczak, follows the murderous path Macbeth carves out in order to become King of Scotland. Intrigued by the prophecy of three witches who announce he will become king, and spurred on by his fiendish wife to destroy all those who stand in his way, the play dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake.
Macbeth attains the crown, but his hold remains tenuous, as those around him come to believe he committed unspeakable deeds to obtain the throne.
The production, set in Medieval Scotland, features 19 actors from throughout New Jersey. Troupe of Friends has mounted free Shakespeare-in-the-park productions since 2006, and was recently nominated for three "Perry Awards" - prestigious recognition from the New Jersey Association of Community Theaters.
Patrons are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of rain, performances will be held indoors at the Community Room, 425 E. Broad St. All performances are free, and donations are gladly accepted.

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
