CRANFORD - The young Cranford High School varsity girls basketball team, comprised of just one senior, finished its 2019-2020 season with a record of 10-15.

Cranford's starting lineup this year consisted of Elizabeth McCaffery, Gianna Toretta, Kirsten Williams, Amanda Vath, and Sarah O'Donnell. Natalia Kruk, Olivia Merriman, and Kathryn Wheatley also received some starts and played key rotational roles. The Cougars stand to only lose Toretta, the lone senior.

"We had some ups and downs this season, but the girls worked really hard and I truly enjoyed coaching them," said Dyer. "This was a fun and enjoyable group and I look forward to what the future holds."

Though it was a slight step back from last season's 11-14 record, head coach Jackie Dyer believes her team learned a lot and can carry it over to next year.

"We should definitely make big steps next season," said Dyer. "This year, we were young experience-wise. With a lot of returning players, things will be exciting. When we play our game, push the ball up the floor and play aggressive defense, good things happen."

Cranford's most exciting game this season came back on January 28 against Oak Knoll. Earlier in the month (January 7), Oak Knoll dominated the Cougars 47-19, but Cranford put the past aside in their next meeting and battled to the very last second in which Amanda Vath grabbed an offensive rebound, followed by a successful putback shot, scoring what would be the game-winning basket with just seconds remaining to give Cranford a 42-41 victory.
