CRANFORD, NJ – Hartz Mountain Industries has requested an adjournment of the July 19 planning board meeting.

The application put forth by Hartz Mountain for 750 Walnut Avenue required a rezoning of the current commercial property to a residential property before development could be approved.

“Hartz is scheduled to make a presentation to the Cranford Township Committee on July 18 regarding possible redevelopment designation of the project site, and, as long as we are proceeding in good faith with that process, we do not wish to burden the Planning Board with the rezoning application,” James P. Rhatican, Director of Land Use and Development, wrote in his letter.

The application proposed by Hartz Mountain has sparked intense resident backlash and community resistance. Multiple residents appeared before the township committee at its most recent meeting to voice their protests and concerns.

“Following the redevelopment hearing on July 18, we will advise whether an additional adjournment of the Planning Board rezoning application is warranted,” the letter reads. “To facilitate this request, we consent to a 60 day adjournment of the Planning Board’s separate time periods to hold a hearing and to act on the rezoning application. To avoid the need to re-notice, we ask that you please announce the new meeting at the July 19 hearing.”

The Cranford Township Committee will meet on July 18 at 8 p.m.
