SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The Jonathan Dayton softball team came from behind and beat Cranford in an extra inning game, 4-3.  The winning run was a solo home run to right field by senior center fielder and one of the team’s captains, Marinna Kwinta.

The game did not start well for the Bulldogs as Cranford built a three run lead through four innings by scoring two runs in the third and one in the fourth.  That was all Dayton’s pitching and fielding allowed the Cougars.   The momentum seemed to shift and the Bulldogs scored a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning to tie the game.

One of the three captains, senior Arianna DeMartino pitched a strong game.  She pitched eight innings, gave up seven hits and struck out three.  She had very good support in the field.

At the plate, Kwinta was two of five.  She was responsible for two of the four RBIs.  Junior Holly Wilson was one of three and knocked in one run.  Sophomore Maggie Phillips was back at first base.  She was one of four at the plate and that hit was a triple and she had the other RBI.

Coach Pamela De La Flave said, “We did a phenomenal job today.  Not only did we beat one ofht etop teams in Union County, we also out hit them.  Everyone in the line-up contributed and battled.  This was a huge win and confidence booster.  I’m so proud of these girls.”

The Bulldogs had ten hits in 33 at bats.  Others getting hits were junior left fielder Angelina Cacioppo, DeMartino, junior at third base Sophia Ritter, the other captain and catcher senior Karly Fitzpatrick, and freshman right fielder Victoria Delia.

There were many good fielding plays.  Junior shortstop Amanda Lau was active fielding grounders and catching pop ups.  Freshman Haeley Santos made several plays including a running over the shoulder catch of foul pop fly.

Dayton’s next game is Tuesday at home against Elizabeth High School.  On Thursday, they travel to Benedictine Academy.
