CRANFORD, NJ - When it comes to local living, most people like to be in the know about the newest place to grab a bite to eat.   Sometimes the best kept secrets are tucked away right under one’s nose.

Chow hounds looking for the next undiscovered source of home-style comfort food need look no further than the Cranford United Methodist Church.   Church members are cranking out some souper grub just in time for the big game this year.

On Saturday Feb. 4, 2017 CUMC will host a Souper-Bowl and Chili Festival from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Twelve homemade soups and chilis will be available for take-out just in time to make an appearance on game-day party tables.

CUMC soup mavens originally started making and selling soup as part of the church’s annual Christmas Shoppe each December.

“We sold the soup at our event each year for lunch on site or for takeout, " Holly Walker, church member and soup-maker, said. "Soup sales became so popular, we renamed the event to the Christmas Shoppe and Soup Festival.”

According to Walker, each year the team makes more and more soup, and they continue to sell out completely.

For the first time, the CUMC’s soup mavens are dusting off their ladles and bringing their specialty creations to  game day.    Bets on this souper-bowl team are that supplies will not last.

Those interested in ordering, can download an order form and mail with a  check payable to CUMC to: Cranford United Methodist Church, Souper-Bowl Team, 201 Lincoln Ave. East, Cranford, NJ 07016. Pre-paid advance orders will be reserved for pick up that day.

Pints and Quarts of the following soups and chilis will be available for $4 and $8 each:

  • Potato Cheddar with Bacon Soup
  • Potato Cheddar (no bacon)
  • Smokin’ Beef Chili (spicy)
  • Beefy Bean Chili (mild)
  • Chicken Corn Chowder
  • Cheeseburger Soup
  • Tomato Basil Soup
  • Turkey Vegetable Soup
  • Vegetarian Vegetable Soup
