Pedestrian Killed on Route 22 Friday Morning Identified


UNION, NJ – The person struck and killed by a motor vehicle as he attempted to cross Route 22 this morning has been identified as Edgard Cruz of Union.

According to Union Police, the accident occurred at 9:30 Friday morning near the Point Condos and Chick-fil-A.

Cruz, 67, was attempting to cross three lanes of Route 22 East from the Point Condos to the 7-11 on the center island.  He was struck by a black 2015 Chrysler 200 driving in the left-hand lane.

Cruz was transported to University Hospital in Newark.  The driver of the Chrysler, who was not injured, remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The accident is being investigated by Officer Michael Cocca of the Union Police Department Fatal Accident Unit.  Any persons that may have witnessed the crash or its immediate aftermath are asked to call the Union Police Department at (908) 851-5000.
