Shady Rest Country Club Presentation with Larry Hogan at JCC on Mon, Feb. 13

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The JCC will host The Shady Rest Country Club: A Black NJ Cultural Oasis in the Age of Segregation with Larry Hogan at the JCC on Monday, Feb. 13 at 11:15 a.m.

Larry Hogan, Senior Professor at Union County College will tell the story of The Shady Rest Country Club, the black-owned and operated country club in Scotch Plains from the 1920s to the 1950s. The presentation examines the rich social, recreational, professional, athletic, business, educational and entertainment world behind the veil of segregation that separated white from black through much of 19th and 20th century America. 

The speaker, Larry Hogan has taught, researched, written about, published and presented programs in the field of African American history for more than 40 years. Dr. Hogan is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on Negro League baseball. He has a B.A. from Fairfield University, his M.A. from the University of Connecticut and his Ph.D. from Indiana University.  This event is sponsored by Horizon Speakers Bureau.

UC Tech Student Volunteers Put Fun and Games to Work for Special Needs Learners

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Earlier this month, a group of 51 students in grades 9 to 11 from the Teacher Education Academy at UC TECH staged an indoor carnival for special needs learners.
