CRANFORD - Following a 14-goal and 16-assist season, Cranford High School junior Maggie Murray has been named the Union County Conference Player of the Year by NJ.com.
Murray's breakout year helped lead Cranford, the Union County Conference Champions, to an 18-4 record (12-0 at home), the second best in the program's history. Though the Cougars didn't bring home a tournament championship, they reached the finals of the Union County Tournament for the first time since 2013 and the finals of the North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 Tournament for the first time since 2000.
Many knew this season would be a magical one when Cranford ended Westfield's 48-game unbeaten streak in early September. The Cougars also took down another rival in Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Cranford had not defeated either Westfield or Scotch Plains-Fanwood since 2015.
The UCC Player of the year isn't the only award Murray earned. She has also been named 3rd Team All-State and 2nd Team All-Group 3. Murray's teammate Lauren Williamson also received 2nd Team All-Group 3 honors.
