SPRINGFIELD, NJ - On March 20, 2018 at 8:14 a.m. the Springfield Fire Department was dispatched to Route 78 Westbound near milepost 50.2 for a report of a woman in labor on the side of the road.

Captain Mastroeni (Unit 2) & Chief Palumbo (Unit 1) were the first units to arrive on scene, and quickly recognized that the woman would be unable to make it to the hospital in time for delivery.

In the extremely cold weather conditions, and during the morning rush hour traffic, delivery commenced.  The mother was reclined in the passenger seat of the vehicle, and Captain Mastroeni began to coach her preparing to deliver the baby. During the delivery, the umbilical cord became wrapped around the baby's neck.  Captain Mastroeni was able to quickly remove the cord and continue delivery procedures.

Upon the final push, the baby was successfully delivered at which time Chief Palumbo clamped and cut the umbilical cord.  The baby girl was immediately wrapped in towels and blankets and stimulated to aid her breathing.  The baby let out two cries and then was quickly moved to a heated ambulance where both she and her mother were transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Later that morning, Chief Palumbo and Captain Mastroeni visited the baby girl and her proud parents in the hospital.  The healthy baby girl weighed in at 6 lbs. while her mother rested comfortably.

This was Captain Mastroeni's first delivery.  For Chief Polumbo, it was his second delivery.  The first occured in the June 2011 in the TD Bank parking lot on Morris Ave.  Chief Polumbo said, "That is something you will never forget."

Members of Springfield's Fire Department study and train for such an event and on March 20 they were ready.  A call was placed to the doctor at Morristown Memorial Hospital to help them get through a delivery that had some challenges.
