Student-Led March for Our Lives to Take Place in Montclair, Mar. 24

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Montclair and surrounding-area students are planning to participate in a movement called 'March for Our Lives' taking place on Saturday, March 24. Part of a nationwide movement to pass common-sense gun legislation in America, the students plan on gathering in several places across the state of New Jersey, including Montclair, Maplewood, Paterson, Union and Newark.

Jaime Bedrin, regional co-organizer for Moms Demand Action, was a guest on the weekly Roundtable Radio Show on 95.1FM (Essex County) on Sunday, to discuss gun safety. Bedrin, who joined Moms Demand Action nearly five years ago, now stated that her organization has over 4 million members nationally, Since the Parkland school shooting, Bedrin stated that the interest in becoming involved in her organization has spiked.

She spoke of the march and stated that her organization has an entire campaign devoted to the theme, "Be Smart." Bedrin organization holds assembly programs for schools, churches and others in an effort to educate the public about gun safety.

"We want to get more people to talk about gun safety in the home and to raise awareness," said Bedrin.

In conjunction with the national March for Our Lives event in Washington D.C. there are other events planned across the state and country.

According to published announcements, March for Our Lives NJ is a student-centered, student-led event that is being planned by a diverse committee of students from various schools across New Jersey. T

The announcement for the event stated that the National Organization March for Our Lives New Jersey was inspired by the student-activists from Parkland, Florida who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Montclair is also supporting the youth and their families by participating in the March for Our Lives at Military Park in Newark on March 24 at 10am.  If interested, participants will meet in front of NJPAC, 1 Center Street in Newark, at 9:00 am.  Participants have been encouraged to look for the banner with the UUCM chalice.  Please contact Teresa DeSousa at tdesousa@gmx.com or (201) 424-3438 for more information.  

Montclair Art Museum is getting in on the action, as well, by allowing teens to use their space to make posters, T-shirts, buttons and the like for the march. The open studio will take place on Thursday, March 22, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Some materials will be provided. This session is free and open to the public.
