CRANFORD - At approximately 3:01 p.m. on Thursday, the Cranford Police Department received a radio transmission, broadcasted from the Union County Police Department, reporting a house fire on Brookdale Place.

Upon arrival of both Cranford Police and Fire Departments, it was discovered a single-family residential structure was found to be heavily involved with fire. The body of a deceased female, later identified as Deborah Meehan (65 y/o), was discovered at the scene by firefighters on the first floor. The cause of death is initially unknown and the body was transferred to the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy is being performed.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental and through a preliminary investigation is believed to have started on the first floor of the home. An ongoing investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force is continuing. The Cranford Fire Department was assisted by several neighboring municipalities to get the blaze under control
