EDISON, NJ -- Mia Reyes of Piscataway, a senior at The Wardlaw+Hartridge School in Edison, was proud to represent her school at the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration. The event, held Feb. 4 at Seton Hall University, recognized the outstanding accomplishments of scholastic and collegiate female athletes from New Jersey.
“I was very excited and honored to be among so many positive and progressive young women. The stories that the guest speakers shared about their struggles to join sports teams and clubs were simply inspiring and touching,” said Mia, a captain on the girls’ soccer team who has been named to Greater Middlesex Conference and Prep all-star teams throughout her scholastic career.
Mia’s enthusiasm for her teammates and consistency of character were key factors in her selection by the W+H coaches. Mia finished her stellar career with 30 goals and a school record 59 assists.
“Her team record for assists clearly defines what she’s all about. However, Mia’s career cannot be measured solely by her impressive statistics. Mia has been an inspiration to everyone connected to our program. She has been a team leader since her first game in ninth grade. She has played a significant role in developing a very focused and positive team dynamic,” veteran W+H head coach Mike Romeo of Plainfield said.
“This award is one that stems from years of women’s resilience, hard work, and leadership. I believe that I embody all of those characteristics because in many ways, sports have shaped me into the young woman I am today: hardworking, eager to maintain a positive attitude, resilient, and most of all a team-player,” said Mia, who was joined by her parents and Coach Romeo at the event.

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
