ELIZABETH, NJ - Staff, and residents of the Atria Senior Living Center in Cranford made a special road trip to the Radiation Oncology Center at Trinitas Regional Medical Center on September 6. The visit had a purpose, to deliver 27 handcrafted heart pillows to be donated to patients undergoing Radiation treatments at Trinitas.

Jaye Shear the Engage Life Director from Atria was joined by colleague Hugo Grisales and residents Letty Kurek, Mary Frigand and Kaye Raba.

The pillows were presented to Judy Labellarte, Manager of Radiation Oncology, Radiation Therapist Doreen Rinaldo and Lisa Liss, Director of Volunteer services at Trinitas.

The pillows were handcrafted by the women over a three-week timeframe. Each pillow is made of soft fleece and hand tied into the heart shapes. No sewing is involved.

Shear decided to donate the pillows here during her final week at work before retirement. Her Mother in Law Vickie Shear was a long time Volunteer at the hospital and Shear has had several friends treated at the Cancer Center. Shear is also a 17-year breast cancer survivor, so the donation to Radiation Oncology seemed like the logical choice.

“The pillows are brightly colored and very soft! We have already given a couple to patients here today and they were delighted.” Rinaldo stated.  Labellarte gave the patients a choice from several of the pillows so they could choose one that resonates with their favorite color or pattern.  “We really thank Jaye and her residents and staff from Atria for this very generous and heartfelt donation. No pun intended” said Labellarte.

Rinaldo and Labellarte agreed that the pillows will be greatly appreciated by the patients undergoing treatments.
