Trinity Episcopal Church, 119 Forest Avenue Cranford, NJ, invites everyone to come celebrate the Holy Week services at Trinity Cranford from March 25 to April 1st. Join us to feel the Grace of God throughout this exceptional week beginning with Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem on Palm/Passion Sunday, the contemplative Taize service on Monday, see the origins of the Eucharist at the Last Supper service on Maundy Thursday, witness the light seemingly begin to fade at the service of Tenebrae on Good Friday, light the Paschal Fire on Saturday….All culminating with the joyful celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. “The three great services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Paschal Vigil on Saturday, together are collectively known as the Triduum, encapsulate the heart of the Christian faith,” said The Reverend Andy Kruger, Trinity’s Priest-in-Charge. All are welcome to attend!
The Trinity Cranford Holy Week Service Schedule is:
Sunday March 25th: Palm/Passion Holy Eucharist - 8:00 AM (Rite I) & 10:00 AM (Rite II)/music
Begin Holy Week at Trinity Cranford on Palm/Passion Sunday. The service begins with the joy of the Liturgy of the Palms commemorate the joy Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. This is followed by a dramatic reading of the Liturgy of the Passion according to St Mark. Join us as we gather together for the Blessed Palms ceremony and the power of the Passion story on Palm/Passion Sunday. Mass will be held at 8:00 AM Rite I Liturgy and 10:00 AM Rite II Liturgy with Choral music.
Monday March 26th: Taize Service – 7:30 PM
The Taize form of worship utilizes short repetitive chants and periods of silence to nurture a quiet meditative space for us to encounter God. The church will be specially decorated for the service with Taize-inspired elements to create an environment of intimacy. Taize chants of short, repetitive phrases are quite simple to learn and pick up. Repeating the short but meaningful chants allows us to experience them more deeply.
Thursday March 29th: Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist with Handwashing & Vigil– 7:30 PM
The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum which means “command.” Beginning with Jesus’ command to serve each other, the evening will begin with the ritual of hand washing, showing us the true meaning of servant hood. Then the serviced will focus on the institution of the Eucharist within the context of the Last Supper Jesus celebrated with his disciples and we will witness the stripping of the altar and exit in silence. Those who wish to may keep the vigil through the night as the disciples did with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Friday March 30th: Good Friday – Tenebrae Service 7:30PM
Tenebrae means “shadows” or “darkness.” That is a perfect title for a service that prepares us so well, in heart, mind, even in body, for the three days when the Light seemed to fade. It is a haunting service of readings of Scripture. The most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of the candles while a series of readings are spoken. The readings will be interspersed with instrumental music from the flute and piano.
Saturday March 31st: Easter Vigil - 8:00 PM
The very heart of the Liturgical Year is the Paschal Vigil, the culmination of the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. Share the depth and richness of our Faith as we light the Pascal Candle, remember great Bible stories, renew our Baptismal Vows, and celebrate Holy Communion.
Sunday April 1st: Easter Sunday Eucharist- 10:00 AM (Rite II) with music
Join in this joy-filled celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ALLELUIA!!
