The Westfield Area YMCA is proud to announce that Pamela Gedman, 6th degree Black Belt and Chief Instructor of Gedman’s Black Belt Academy, has become the 2019 ATA World Champion in Combat Sparring and earned a Silver medal in Traditional Sparring and a Bronze in Weapons in her age group division.  Fellow instructor Norberto (Bert) Rivera qualified in Forms and Team Combat and Team Sparring.  

The 2019 ATA World Championships was held July 9-12 in Little Rock, Arkansas. ATA International has licensed over 1000 independently owned and operated martial arts locations, currently in operation in over 21 countries. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the organization and these championships. 

Gedman’s Black Belt Academy of the Westfield Area YMCA is located at the Robert and Virginia Bauer Family Branch, 422 East Broad Street, Westfield and offers programs for adults, teens and children beginning at age 4. Classes are taught by a team of certified black belt instructors. Classes for beginners through 6th degree black belts are available. Beginner students are required to attend the Intro class (no uniform required) before beginning rank-specific training. No annual commitment or contract is required to participate. Rank advancement ceremonies are held on-site at the Bauer Branch four times a year.
