CRANFORD, NJ – Senior Martha Hurley and junior Michael Carracino have been selected as Cranford High School’s Athletes of the Week for outstanding athletic performance. The two were also chosen as athletes of the week for the Union County Conference, which includes all the high school athletes in the county.

Hurley, a captain on the varsity field hockey team, leads the Cougars with seven goals and two assists this season.

“I like being around and involved in the team,” Hurley said. “I’m motivated by the love of the sport and I want to help my team do well.”

Hurley netted two penalty strokes this season, most recently in a game-winning goal against Newark Academy last week. She’s looking at Division III colleges so she can play field hockey while furthering her education. Her hero is Herb Brooks, an Olympic hockey coach.

“He brought college kids instead of professional hockey players and they made the number one team in the world,” she said.

Carracino, a member of the varsity soccer team, has recorded one goal and three assists within the last two weeks.

“I like moving all around,” Carracino said. “Ninety minutes of nonstop action, plus running, is the perfect sport.”

In Cranford’s most recent game against Linden, conference and county rivals, Carracino scored one goal and two assists for a 3-2 win.

“I want to showcase my true potential,” he said. “It’s self-motivated.”

Playing soccer in college is Carracino’s main goal, he said. He plays club soccer as well.

“I want to be the best that I can possibly be,” Carracino said. “I look up to Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s one of the biggest soccer players in the world and a really, really influential guy. That’s a big motivator for me as well.”

Proud to support Tom Malinowski for Congress

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
