CRANFORD, NJ – Following leading performances in track and field and ice hockey, Hanna Capone and Ryan Malko are Cranford High School’s Athletes of the Week.
Capone, a junior on the winter track team, recently earned the North II, Group III sectional title in the pole vault with a height of 9 ft. 3 inches, her personal best.
“I’m motivated by my personal accomplishments,” Capone said. “Winning isn’t something I need to do, but it’s a bonus.”
Capone will represent CHS in the upcoming state championships.
“I look up to the older girls on my club team at Vault Factory,” she said. “I admire them when I watch them practice and I look forward to being as good as them someday.”
Malko is a senior captain on the varsity ice hockey team. He recently scored a hat trick in the CHS win against West Essex.
“I like being part of the team and having a good bond with the guys,” Malko said. “I want to do the best that I can and see how far I can go if I push myself.”
Additionally, Malko leads the team in goals and assists for the season with 16 goals and 11 assists.
“I watch professionals and try to do what they do,” he said. “They do the right thing, obviously.”
Both Malko and Capone are keeping their options open to compete at the collegiate level, the said.
