CRANFORD, NJ- Meg Cui and Emily Wilson were recently announced as Cranford High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2018, respectively. At a quaint breakfast ceremony led by Principal Mark Cantagallo, the students, their families, guidance counselors and administrators gathered to celebrate the prestigious honors.

Cui participates in math, science, history, volunteer, language and arts clubs and societies. She serves in leadership positions in many of these and has received honors and awards from both Brown University and Columbia University.

“It was fun to challenge myself and take all of the hard classes that I could.” Cui said. “Everyone told me junior year would be the hardest, so I told myself, yeah, I need to bring my GPA up. Something my brother once told me stuck with me, ‘Pain is temporary, but GPA is forever!’”

In addition to her academic accolades, Cui participates in varsity field hockey, is a silver award level Girl Scout and is a co-founder of CHS Teen Tutoring. She plans to attend New York University this fall.

Wilson is heavily involved in swimming, both in connection with the school and on her own. In addition to being a swimmer for the Jersey Gators and captain on the CHS swim team, Wilson works a summer job as a lifeguard, is a year-round swim instructor and is a volunteer swim coach for special needs swimmers through the Special Olympics.

“It was definitely worth all of the hard work,” said Wilson. “Next year, I’m excited to meet a lot more people and focus my academic interests in the STEM field. And congrats to Meg, too.”

Wilson is also the treasurer of both the Math Honor Society and National Honor Society at CHS and co-president of CHS Teen Tutoring. She plans to attend Lafayette University this fall.

Cui and Wilson will be asked to deliver speeches at the 2018 commencement ceremony in June.

Emma-Rose Bacall is a high school student participating in a journalism program with TAPinto Cranford.
