CRANFORD - Located in the heart of Downtown Cranford, River and Rail Cantina warmed the hearts of service industry and hospitality workers whose jobs have been affected by the Coronavirus outbreak with a free lunch on Monday.
There was no need to purchase anything - the deal was no strings attached, and according to owner John Roder, about 65 people stopped by for a free lunch, despite the rainy weather.
"One of the neat things that I found pretty cool was that people called up and asked 'if this qualified,'" said Roder, one of three River and Rail Cantina owners (also Sal Perillo and Chris Ryder). "We had one person who said 'I'm a wedding photographer,' and I thought it was neat because nobody was trying to take advantage of it. They wanted to make sure it was ok."
Originally intended for just Cranford service industry and hospitality workers, Roder said when workers from other towns came calling, he couldn't say no.
"I'm happy with everybody we got to meet. It was people who last Sunday had a job, and then on Monday, it was either lost or on hold. Hopefully we made people happy and put a smile on their face."
River and Rail Cantina is currently offering curbside pickup and free delivery. Along with delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine, you can also add beer and wine to your order from River and Rail Wine and Spirits located next door. Check out their Facebook page for deals and specials!
