Cranford Girl Scouts Receive Gold and Silver Awards

GARWOOD, NJ – Cranford’s Amanda Bush and Mary Grace McNamara recently received Gold Awards, a Girl Scout’s highest honor, at a ceremony held by the Girl Scouts of Cranford at the Westwood in Garwood.

Gold Award projects require a minimum 80 hours of work and require the girls to create a plan, enact the plan and gathering feedback to inspire and educate others .Bush, a freshman at Farleigh Dickinson University, focused her project on raising awareness for pet therapy and its benefits. McNamara spearheaded Diabetic Dudes, a support group for preteen boys with Type 1 Diabetes.

“The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn,” Alex Paulyson, media relations for the Girl Scouts of Cranford, said in a press release. “The Girl Scout Gold Award has stood for excellence and leadership for girls everywhere.”

Guest speakers at the ceremony included Assemblywoman Nancy Muñoz, Martha Garcia, Director of Veteran’s Services at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Kathryn Ferguson, Teacher at Livingston Avenue Elementary School and Kelly Reider, Detective in the Juvenile Bureau of the Cranford Police Department.  

In addition, Cranford’s Rebecca Durant and Morgana Haub were awarded the Distinguished Girl Scout Service Award and Scholarship for contributing more than 40 hours of community service as a mentor to younger Cranford Girl Scouts.

Lastly, the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, was presented to the following girls: Julia Butka, Madison Weischadle, Madison Dilts, Mikaylee Grohol, Isabelle Hunt, Victoria Lima, Julia Love and Jaliah Meralla.

“I am very proud of the girls honored tonight for their hard work, dedication, service and leadership in the communities they served,” Lisa Durant, Cranford Girl Scout Service Unit Manager, said. “Their projects demonstrate their leadership, passion and desire to be the positive change to make a difference in the world around them.”
