Cranford H.S. Blood Drive Held for Retired Teacher

CRANFORD, NJ - Cranford High School held a blood drive in honor of recently retired physical and driver’s education teacher Gene Melleno, who taught at Cranford High School for 35 years and coached girls basketball and tennis.

“It’s amazing to see the number of students that came out to donate not just for the gift of life, but also in Mr. Melleno’s honor,” said Kathleen Savage, faculty coordinator of the blood drive.

The blood drive was open to students and the community. Participants also had the opportunity to donate with the ALYX machine, which is a machine that takes out two donations worth of red blood cells but also inserts fluid back into the body. The event was run by the New York Blood Center and all the volunteers were juniors and seniors at Cranford High School.
