CRANFORD, NJ – The Cranford Township Committee honored two new eagle scouts at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Kevin McCarthy and Roy Walton, both college freshmen from Troop 80, received a proclamation and keys to the township for earning the rank of eagle scout.

“Kevin and Roy, we’re very proud of everything that you’ve done in your scouting career,” Mayor Thomas Hannen Jr. said. “It’s been an honor to see both of you grow up into very important young men in our community. We hope as you complete your college careers, you come back to join us and keep contributing to the community.”

To earn his rank, McCarthy installed 100 feet of fencing in Johnson Park, built two picnic tables and cleaned debris in the park for his eagle scout project.

Walton earned his rank by installing two rain gardens for the Master Gardeners of Union County. The gardens are arranged so the plants are more tolerable to rain and will receive the maximum amount of rainfall.

“Congratulations gentlemen for reaching the rank of eagle scout, it’s not an easy thing to do,” Commissioner Jean-Albert Maisonneuve said. “You’re in rare air.”

Both scouts received congratulations from the township committee for their contributions to the township.

“Those are just two more outstanding examples of the youth in our community and the lengths that they’ve gone to to keep Cranford a real special place,” Hannen said.
