CRANFORD - The Cranford Township Committee voted to extend the annual residential sewer bill due date grace period an additional 60 days to July 30, 2020, due to hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The due date for the sewer bill remains May 1, but rather than a 30-day grace period (May 30), an additional 60 days gives residents a total of a 90-day grace period (July 30) before penalty.
Typically paid in two installments, the decision was made by recommendation of the finance department earlier in the year to combine the two payments into one for 2020. Mayor Giblin said the decision was made with the intent to save money on billing, while also helping keep residents from receiving an inadvertent tax lien.
"This was a bill that was to be paid twice a year, but a lot of residents missed the second payment," said Giblin. "They would end up going on the tax lien rolls for a 90 dollar sewer bill."
