CRANFORD - The Cranford Zoning Board earned praise for its decision to disallow construction of a cell tower on the campus of Union County College.
The Cranford Zoning board had on Monday rejected variances that would have allowed Verizon to build a cell tower on the college campus. The Residents Against Union County College Cell Tower Facebook page posted the photo below following the board's no vote.
Verizon had in 2019 secured a land lease from Union County College to build a 130-foot monopole cell tower at the college, which had cited service gaps.
The proposal prompted a public outcry, from neighboring residents, including those in Westfield.
Later designs presented to the Cranford Zoning Board called for a “faux tree” cell tower. Residents, who turned out at numerous meetings of the zoning board over the past two years continued their objections.
And on Monday, the board denied the variances. Watch video of the meeting posted by Cranford Tv35.
