Black Bear in Cranford, Police on Scene

Update - 1:01pm: More than a dozen neighbors are outside watching the scene.

According to Garwood Police, the bear is small and most likely young.

Update: The most recent sighting of the bear was in the backyard of a home on Walnut Street in Garwood. At about 12:30 p.m., police on the scene said that the bear was hiding under a deck. Officials from the Department of Fish & Wildlife arrived at about 12:40 p.m.

CRANFORD, NJ - Cranford police are on the scene Monday morning due to a black bear that is roaming through the township.

Police released an advisory at 8:11 a.m. that said the bear was seen in the area of Beech Street, near Brookside Place School. The school was pushed to a delayed opening at 9:45 p.m.

As of 9:08 a.m., Cranford police are continuing to follow the bear in the same area. They ask residents to avoid the bear.

A bear was also seen in Westfield last night.

Update: Road Closures Continue Following Water Main Break

CRANFORD, NJ - Elizabeth Avenue and NJ-28 are closed in both directions, including Garden State Parkway exit 137.

The roads were closed earlier Sunday morning following a water main break in the area at approximately 7:30 a.m., according to the Breaking News Network.
