The state’s Division of Fish and Wildlife says the most common problem people experience with bears is the animals getting into garbage.

“Bears are attracted to neighborhoods by garbage odors,” the state says on its website. “So properly securing your garbage is one of the best ways to prevent bears from becoming a nuisance in your community.”
