CRANFORD - Congratulations to this week's Cranford High School Athletes of the Week, Connor Katz and Molly Gardiner.
Katz, a senior on the varsity football team, completed 10-of-12 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown in Friday night's 31-8 victory over Immaculata. Katz's TD pass was an 80-yard bomb to Tom Korzeneski on the Cougars' first offensive play of the night. Katz has connected with Korzeneski for a TD in all but one game this season.
"Tommy lives literally right behind me. We're neighbors," said Katz. "We've been throwing together since we've been like eight years old. We've developed a pretty good connection with that."
Along with his 197 passing yards, Katz also rushed 13 times for 78 yards and a TD. On the season, Katz has combined for seven touchdowns (three passing, four rushing).
"It has to do with game plan and what we see in them," said Katz about his ability to run and pass. "I feel like I'm fast enough where I can run on anybody and I'm confident enough in my receivers' ability to be able to throw on anybody."
Cranford football is currently 3-1 and will take on undefeated Rahway (4-0) on the road this Friday. Katz, in his third year as starting quarterback, hopes to continue his strong play to make a run for a sectional title before he graduates.
"There are times where I feel like I've been the quarterback here forever but it really does go by so fast," said Katz. "It's been a real enjoyable experience. Coach Rosenmeier makes it a fun one. My teammates are some of my best friends that I'll have forever."
Gardiner, a sophomore on the varsity girls tennis team, plays first singles and has an individual record of 11-2. She finished fourth at the Union County Tournament last week and also competed in singles at the State Tournament this past weekend.
