CRANFORD - Congratulations to this week’s Cranford High School Athletes of the Week, Tom Gilmartin and Morrigan Gardiner.
Gilmartin, a senior on the varsity golf team, led the Cougars to a 4-1 record last week by averaging 2 over par in the matches. Included in these matches were 2 even par rounds.
"We lost a few seniors last year but we're off to a really good start," said Gilmartin. "We have a lot of great teams in our conference and it's just good to get off to a 4-1 start. We're working towards qualifying for states so we're starting off on the right foot this year."
Gilmartin noted that prior to the season, he worked on improving his short game, which includes putting and chipping.
"I have a more controlled swing right now," added Gilmartin. "I'm just working on the little things right now trying to shave strokes wherever I can."
Gardiner, a sophomore on the varsity softball team, pitched 16 innings in three games and allowed only two runs on six hits and had 27 strikeouts, powering the Cougars to a 3-0 start. This past Saturday, she tossed a five-inning no-hit shutout and struck out 10 while walking just one.
Along with Gardiner's strong pitching, the offense has been on fire. All three wins to open the season have come via mercy rule. Gardiner has helped her cause at the plate starting the season with a strong .600 average, and believes the team's success is due to their chemistry built over the years.
"We've all played together for a long time and we're all comfortable with each other," added Gardiner.
