CRANFORD, NJ – The Cranford Girls Soccer team plans to conquer this season by working for one another and emphasizing relationships, according to coach Andrew Gagliardo.

The strategy is off to a strong start as the team defeated Union Catholic, 6-0, in their first home game of the season last Thursday.

“I’ve been preaching the concept since pre-season started back in August, and the girls are growing closer every game and training session,” Gagliardo said.

Last year, the team finished at 9-11-1. The girls reached the Union County Tournament semifinals and the state sectional quarterfinals.

“Last year was a gritty one for us,” Gagliardo said. “We had 13 seniors on our squad and always played against very good competition every game. This year’s team is a very focused and determined group of girls. We have a bunch of returning players who will help set the tone for us, and a lot of younger players who are always maturing and working their hardest. I’m very confident in every girl on our team.”

This year, Gagliardo looks forward to competing in the Union County conference and Watchung division, which he says are some of the toughest in the state. The team will be led by captains Caroline McCaffery and Meagan Montague, both seniors.

“It’s been an honor being able to work with this group of girls this season, and we’re excited to get it underway,” Gagliardo said. “Westfield and Scotch Plains are always a battle, and I’m excited for our girls to show everyone what we’ve got.”

The Cranford Girls Soccer Team will face Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. in a home game.
