WESTFIELD, NJ — More than 500 people participated in the Westfield Area YMCA’s 5K Run for Everyone Sunday. The annual run/walk/roll supports the Y’s Dragonfly program, which offers physical, recreational and social classes for young adults with special/adaptive needs.
“With funding from this run, we will expand to include classes for teens with special needs, so thanks to everyone for supporting it,” said Bonnie Cohen, the Westfield Area YMCA’s director of communications & development.
Dragonfly classes include Let’s Move and Dance, crafts, strength and conditioning, boxing, yoga and movement and social games. Personal training is also available.
Sam Tooley, whose brother Jake died when their house was destroyed in a fire two weeks ago, was among the runners.
“For me, that’s the highlight of the day,” said Greg Hazisavvas, Westfield Area YMCA senior director of member and wellness engagement and the run’s organizer. “He did really well in the race last year and I’m just rooting for him to win.” Tooley came in sixth place.
Clark Lagemann, senior vice president of operations, spoke about the spirit of community in Westfield.
“I’m really proud to be part of an organization that’s part of this stuff,” he said.
“I would like to thank the sponsors of this event,” Cohen said. “Without them this would not be possible.”
