CRANFORD, NJ – Camryn Wichelns, a star athlete at Cranford High School, recently joined an elite few as the fourth female in the school’s history to score 1,000 points.

As she went into her record-breaking game against Plainfield, Wichelns knew she was close. However, her focus and concentration took control as she scored the three-point basket that earned her those last points.

“It was the best feeling when it happened,” Wichelns said. “I had no idea that I was that close when I shot the three-point. Once I hit the shot, everyone started cheering and I looked over to Lauren Santarelli and asked, ‘did I do it?’ It was worth all the hours I put in working towards improving my game.”

Wichelns had aimed for this goal since she was a young girl after her older cousins, Steven and Jimmy Siracusa, helped her develop her skills and fall in love with the sport. She also thanked her family, friends, coaches and teammates for helping her on and off the court.

“I’ve always looked up to Cerys MacLelland [ a former CHS basketball player},” Wichelns said. “I recall being the only freshman on the varsity team and Cerys took me under her wing, for which I will be forever grateful.”

Wichelns’ coach, Jacqueline Dyer, said it’s been an honor to coach her along the way.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment and I am honored and proud to be able to share this memory with her,” Dyer said. “She is my 3rd player to reach this incredible milestone.”

After high school, Wichelns plans to study physical therapy and work with people recovering from injuries or illnesses. She reached one of her long-term goals already, she said.

“I feel very proud and honored to hold the record at CHS, to show all the future young CHS athletes that hard work and dedication pays off in sports and academics,” Wichelns said. “As a young girl I had a goal to score 1,000-points and the dream became a reality and I’ll forever be grateful for this accomplishment.”

We should give her a chance and if we weren't satisfied, we could ...
