WESTFIELD, NJ — Greta’s Run, a 5K run, walk, roll and fundraiser for people of all abilities organized in memory of Greta Schoenemann takes place this Sunday at Roosevelt Intermediate School.

Online registration ends Friday at 11:59 p.m. The entry fee is $30.

Greta was Westfield High School freshman in 2002 when she died from injuries after a large tree branch fell on her during lunch. Organized by Greta’s childhood friends, all proceeds from the run benefit people with special and adaptive needs.

Recently, Greta’s Run skipped a year to become a 501c3 volunteer-led nonprofit, moved to Roosevelt Intermediate School and changed the date from September to April. Participants travel in from 24 states, so Greta’s Run adopted a local and national approach to impact. This year, Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation will benefit from the proceeds. To learn more, click here.

“We simply want to put on an event that makes you happy and feel included,” co-founder Ben Nanna said. “There are a lot of barriers in the world for all of us; for a couple of hours we want to make them go away. For you to see what community is and can be, that's important to us.”

At the Official Greta's Run After Party, participants can enjoy a Chill Cryotherapy treatment while basking in the sun outside of 16Prospect Wine Bar & Bistro, drinking a mimosa (or Shirley Temple, if you’re under 21) and eating olive dip, he said. Everyone with a Greta’s Run bib will receive 15 percent off of their bill.

“We think you should have more moments like this in life,” Nanna said. “Unfortunately, our community is no stranger to tragedy and loss, but we are resilient and still need to have fun, laugh and meet one another. Nothing will stop Greta's Run from working to make that happen for as many people as possible in this little town of ours."

All online registrants by Friday will be entered to $8,000+ in donated prizes that include a BMW bicycle, beach weekend vacation, Jets tickets, Cryotherapy, The Salad House of Westfield gift cards and a Frederique Constant smart watch. Learn more on the Greta’s Run Facebook page.

Day-of schedule is:  9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. bib/shirt pick-up; 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. day-of registration; 11 a.m. 5K start; noon to 1 p.m. awards and refreshments. The course is USATF certified and sanctioned.

Parting Advice from Four Decades on the Front Lines of Local News

I have decided it is time to spend more time in ...
