ELIZABETH, NJ — Police are reviewing security footage after a shooting at The Mills at Jersey Gardens sent people running Saturday afternoon.

The shooting happened outside the Saks Fifth Avenue store and the suspect fled in a vehicle, city spokeswoman Kelly Martins said. Nobody was hurt, she said.

“It is under investigation, and police are reviewing video footage,” Martins said. “The mall remains open.”

Authorities did not respond to requests for further information Saturday, and it remained unclear what sparked the incident.

A woman working a kiosk at the mall said that she fled when she heard screaming and saw people running — an apparent response to the incident. By around 4:45 p.m., however, the woman had returned to selling slippers.

Police at the mall requested that a reporter conducting interviews exit the building.

Reached by email Frances Fyten, a spokesperson for The Mills, directed press inquiries to city police.

“Please direct any questions to the Elizabeth Police Department, as this is an ongoing police matter,” Fyten said.

In 2018, a man was shot in the wrist in the hallway of the Tommy Hilfiger and Marshalls store at the mall.

In 2019, a fight broke out at the mall and although initial reports indicated gunshots, authorities said no shots were then fired.
