DENVILLE, NJ – Getting the job done in five innings, No. 1 seed Morris Knolls varsity softball shut out No. 8 seed Morristown, 10-0, in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4, tournament on Monday, May 20, in Denville, New Jersey.
Pitching two consecutive one-hit shutouts, Kayla Turcios threw five strikeouts and one walk. The Golden Eagles efficiently retired the side three up, three down in three of five innings without any errors the entire game. Catcher Brielle Eike stealthily picked off one of only two Morristown runners to get on first base.
Twelve Golden Eagles contributed offensively. Carley Mahan hit a two-run homer and two singles. Skye Eppel cracked a double and a single and scored two runs. Maddison Perna nailed a double, which earned her an RBI. Turcios, Jessica Arminio and Kayla Hua earned one RBI apiece from each of their singles. Eike, Nicole Florey and Casey Heitmann each hit a single while courtesy runners Ashley Kiely and Emily Meier scored one run each. Christina Florey’s fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth brought home Hua for the final run of the game.
The Golden Eagles (22-4) will host No. 5 seed Mount Olive (16-6) in the semifinals on Thursday, May 23, at 2 p.m. The game will be a rematch of the 2019 Morris County Tournament final, in which Morris Knolls defeated Mount Olive 11-9.
