RANDOLPH/DENVILLE, NJ – Springtime – or maybe even summer – came early this year, with daytime temperatures in the unseasonable 70s.  Now it’s time for the clocks to catch up with the thermometer, as daylight saving time begins this Sunday, March 13 at 2 a.m.

Luckily, in the age of technology, cell phone clocks and cable boxes will automatically skip ahead one hour at the appointed time.  For those with other clocks in the car, around the house, or on a wrist, remember to change those by hand.

An easy way to remember the difference between turning clocks forward or backward is when fall arrives; it is “time to fall back,” changing clocks back one hour.  In the case of daylight saving time, it is “time to spring forward,” changing clocks one hour ahead.   Some say we lose an hour of sleep, but the benefits of warm weather and pretty flowers far outweigh spending more time inside.

Where did daylight saving time originate?  The concept has its roots in a motivated Benjamin Franklin, who coined the famous saying, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” 

Franklin wrote an essay to a journal in Paris in 1784 relating to energy efficiency. In his writing he explained that by changing the clocks people would be motivated to wake up earlier and make more use of the morning daylight.  It was a broad idea in history, circulating until President Woodrow Wilson signed daylight savings time into law in the United States in 1918. 

So this Sunday, spring ahead and enjoy the extra daylight – working like Franklin might, or playing as you choose.
