DENVILLE, NJ – A Paterson woman showed up smelling like marijuana when she came to the Denville police station recently to meet an acquaintance who, earlier in the day, was charged with drug possession after his marijuana fragrance raised an officer’s suspicion, police said Wednesday.

The woman, Malikata Horton, 27, came to police headquarters on Feb. 26 to see Nathanial Tullies, 53, of Paterson who was being held on numerous drug and motor vehicle charges levied against him that day, police said.

“While standing in the lobby, Horton had he strong odor of burnt and raw marijuana coming from her person while standing with her three juvenile children,” said Denville Police Cpt. Paul Nigro in a statement. He confirmed that Horton came to Denville to meet with Tullies.

Tulles was arrested earlier that day, said Nigro. He said Tullies was stopped by police after he failed to stay in his lane on Morris Avenue. During the stop, police noticed that Tullies was driving with a suspended license and had an active warrant for his arrest.

They also noticed a tell-tale smell.

“While speaking with Tullies, the officer detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana inside the vehicle as well as observing drug paraphernalia in plain view,” Nigro said.

That was enough probable cause for a search of the vehicle, according to the captain who said police found 55 folds of heroin packaged in bundles for distribution, cocaine, Oxycodone, other prescription legend drugs, less than 50 grams of marijuana, hypodermic syringes, stolen blank prescription slips and other drug paraphernalia.

Police believe Tullies was carrying the drugs as part of a plan to sell them, leading to a charge of possession with intent to distribute as well as six drug possession charges, a charge of receiving stolen property, possession of syringes and four motor vehicle complaints, Nigro said.

After catching a whiff of Horton, police looked inside her vehicle and saw drugs and drug paraphernalia in plain view, according to Nigro. He said a further search revealed an Oxycodone pill, less than 50 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. “It was also discovered that Horton drove to headquarters with the CDS (controlled dangerous substances) inside of her vehicle while the children were present,” Nigro said.

In addition to drug possession charges, Horton was charged with child neglect, he said. She was released on her own recognizance but Tullies was placed in the Morris County jail, according to Nigro.
