Candidate Statements

Democrats You Have a Primary Today Too

Even though you did not see any Democrats on your sample ballot, we do have 3 candidates running. There is a write in campaign for Brendan L. Keating, Webster Lewin and Richard Escobar. We are hoping to get 100 write ins to get on the ballot in November.

I, Brendan L. Keating am running to raise the profile of some important issues this campaign season. I want to bring more attention to the Fenimore Dump scandal in Roxbury, I want to keep Pilgrim Pipeline out of Morris County, and I want to protect essential services from being cut indiscriminately. I feel that if you don’t believe in Government, you shouldn’t be running it. We all want smaller government that provides better customer service to tax payers. Candidates from both parties want to lower the tax burden on Morris County residents, that isn’t a GOP only issue. Let me add my name to GOP chorus, “I Brendan L. Keating will do everything in my power to find ways to keep county taxes flat or lower them if elected.” I can say this because I have a proven record of working with politicians on both sides of the aisle for the common good.

If you want some context on why it is important to consider an alternate voice this year for Freeholder, you should look at the campaign literature coming out of the “Morris First” and “Morris Conservative Team” camps. Both sides have candidates touting their support for the 2nd Amendment and NRA membership. When I was at the Chatham Republican Club Debate last month, I asked each candidate if they believed in the 2nd Amendment and if elected Freeholder what they would do about gun control in the county. Every single candidate had the exact same answers: 1) Yes, I support the 2nd Amendment and 2) There is nothing I will do about gun control because it is a state level issue. Well, let me add my name to that list, “I Brendan L. Keating believe in the 2nd Amendment and there is nothing I will do about gun control as Freeholder because it is a state level issue.”

Lets just be clear, the NRA talk is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt at saying that “I’m more conservative than you.” These candidates are light on light on issues if they can waste their time talking about things they won’t have any control over in office. Morris County may have some “Tea Party” sympathizers living here, but by and large our GOP Supermajority is made up of Rodney Frelinghuysen, Chris Christie, and Tom Kean Republicans. They’re moderate reasonable people. You would never see Congressman Frelinghuysen running on the fact that he is a lifetime NRA member. Why is that par for the course for our Freeholder candidates? If all they want to do is grandstand on partisan issues, they should start a Conservative Podcast, not be given the keys to run Morris County. Governing is about compromise, and doing what is best for your constituents (regardless of what your national party’s position is).

Of course this is one of the “Reddest” counties in NJ, but we’re not that kind of red. We need some sanity restored to this fiasco we’ve witnessed this primary season in Morris County. If voters select candidates who are so far right, they can no longer see the middle ground of any issues so that they may work to find compromise, we will continue to have problems.

I hope that voters from both parties will consider voting for me in the general election in November. I want to advocate for all of Morris County. My one voice won’t be enough to upset the supermajority, but at least I can be a force to bring us back a little towards the middle.  So please, if you’re reading this and there is still time to vote on June 2nd, please write me in for Freeholder. I look forward to meeting many of you over the next couple of months.

Sincerely,

Brendan L. Keating

Chatham Borough Environmental Commissioner & Democratic Party Candidate for County Freeholder

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
