DENVILLE, NJ - Promising "no agenda" and "no speeches," the Denville Police Department is inviting everybody to come to a local coffee shop one day next month to just hang out with members of the department and shoot the breeze.

Joining other police departments around the nation participating in "National Coffee with a Cop Day," several of Denville's finest will be found Oct. 4 at Smart World Coffee on Broadway. Officers will be there from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

It will be Denville's first foray into the Coffee with a Cop Day scene. Other departments that conduct the events do so as a way to build rapport with townsfolk.

"Come share a cup of coffee, tea or your particular drink of choice while engaging in casual converstion with members of our police department, or you can just stop by and say hello," said the department in a press release. "There is no agenda and there will be no speeches. It's just an opportunity for you to voice concerns, as questions or just get to know us."

The police department said those who show up will get "a special gift." One can assume it will not be a summons.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
