DENVILLE, NJ – Morris Knolls defeated Roxbury, 30-14, at home on Sat., Oct. 20.
Although neither team scored in the first quarter, Morris Knolls hinted at its dominance when Patrick Sinegra intercepted the ball on Roxbury’s five-yard line with 3:44 remaining in the quarter. Knolls, however, was unable to take advantage of the turnover.
During their second possession of the game, Roxbury was first to put points on the board, scoring within seconds of the start of the second quarter. Lucas Spitzer scored a touchdown on a one-yard run, and Kyle Haegele kicked the extra point to lead the game, 7-0.
With 5:16 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Morris Knolls took control when Steven Vittorio intercepted a pass on Roxbury’s 30-yard line. Two minutes later, Nick Parente ran the ball into the end zone from the one-yard line, and Patrick Sinegra kicked the extra point to tie the game, 7-7.
Sinegra closed the half with his second interception of the game.
It took more than 15 plays in their first possession of the third quarter for the Golden Eagles to change the numbers on the scoreboard. Sinegra scored the team’s second touchdown with a seven-yard run and kicked the point after to take the lead, 14-7.
After a fumble recovery by Matt Adetula on Roxbury’s 25-yard line with 2:23 left in the third quarter, Sinegra extended Knolls’s lead five plays later with a one-yard run into the end zone four seconds into the fourth quarter. Doing double duty once again, Sinegra kicked the extra point to bring the score to 21-7.
After Morris Knolls was unable to capitalize on a sack by Chris Tavarone, followed by an interception by Nick Miller, Roxbury regained possession and with 2:26 remaining in the game, inched closer to Morris Knolls with a 30-yard touchdown pass and extra point, both by Haegele, making the score 21-14.
Roxbury’s threat of a comeback ended, however, with a safety due to holding in the end zone, expanding Knolls lead to 23-14, followed by a 45-yard touchdown interception by Knolls’s Vittorio and the extra point by Sinegra for a final score of 30-14.
The 4-2 Golden Eagles play their last home game of the regular season on Marching Band Senior Day, Sat., Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. against West Morris Central (5-2).
