MORRISTOWN, NJ – Morris Knolls varsity hockey defeated Morristown 5-1 at Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown on Jan. 8. The team did most of its damage in the third period, scoring four of its five goals.
Both teams ended the first period scoreless with 11 shots on goal by Morris Knolls and five by Morristown. Morris Knolls senior Robbie Singley scored the first goal of the game at 14:20 of the second period, assisted by sophomore Jason Kwestel and senior Jacob Walsh. Senior Sean Murray netted two goals, and sophomore Jake DiLoreto and junior Nick Torres scored one goal each.
In addition to Kwestel and Walsh, the following players were credited with assists: sophomore Timmy Kepler, senior Tikhon Ryerson, junior Derek Coleman, junior Jason Moskowitz and senior Kyle Conklin.
Senior goalie Ty Franchi made 17 saves for Morris Knolls.
Jack McKenna scored Morristown’s only goal, assisted by Conor Critchley and Nick Romano. Morristown fought off 31 shots on goals.
Pleased with the team’s decisive victory, Morris Knolls Head Coach Tim Kepler affirmed that it was a much-needed win. “We played as a team all three periods and limited our mistakes. We also had a lot of energy on the bench.”
As for the low-penalty game for both teams, Kepler attributed it to good officiating and well-disciplined teams.
"Our two penalties in the second period changed the momentum for them. Fortunately, we found ways to go hard in the third period and buried pucks."
Morris Knolls faces Roxbury on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 8:15 p.m. at Mennen.
